How To Write SEO Page Titles

If you own a website, and you want that website to get traffic, you need to focus on search engine optimization. According to statistics reported by the Search Engine Journal, 18 percent of all organic clicks will go to the site in the first position and 10 percent will go to the second. Only through SEO can you land in these important spots, and according to SEOmoz, SEO page titles are the most important on-page SEO element outside of the content itself. Learning to write SEO friendly page titles can make the difference between high and low rankings.

Unique Titles for Every Page

To make the most out of your SEO page titles, write unique titles for every page. The titles need to show exactly what the page is about, and since each page of your site should offer something unique, it needs its own title.

Relevant Titles

Next, make sure your SEO friendly page titles are relevant. The goal is to make the title a concise, yet accurate description of the content on the page. Using keywords that are relevant to the content will help you do this, while still influencing the SEO on the page.

Be Attentive to Length

Google limits the number of characters it will show, so your title needs to be concise. SEOmoz recommends no more than 70 characters, while Content Marketing Institute recommends no more than 65. The 60 to 70-character limit is a safe bet. If your title is longer than this, it will not all display, and its effectiveness on the reader is lost.

Brand Your Title – Or Don’t

Some SEO experts recommend including the brand name on the SEO title, no matter what. If you do, your title tag will look something like this:

Placing the brand first is a good tool if your brand carries a lot of weight to the reader. SEOMoz indicates that most brands do better with their most important keyword first, not the branded keyword. You will need to decide which works best for you.

Another option is to leave off the brand altogether. A non-branded title can be a traditional title, like “Learning to Write SEO Page Titles to Improve Search Engine Ranking.” In this case, “learn to write SEO page titles” and “improve search engine ranking” could be considered keywords, but the title still flows. Or, you could simply add a series of keywords, like this: “SEO Page Titles, Improve Search Engine Ranking, Page Titles Tutorial.” Do this if your brand is not particularly well known.

Keep It Engaging

Finally, you need to make sure your titles are engaging, so the flesh-and-blood Internet users will actually click on the link. If you are not using your branded keyword, this is relatively simple. Write a title that makes people want to click on the link, but has your main keyword early. If you are using your brand, this is more challenging. Choosing relevant keywords that encourage clicks, such as “SEO Page Titles Tutorial” over simply “SEO Page Titles,” and then placing them first will encourage clicks.

Your title is the first thing people will see when they search for what you offer. Make it engaging, and focus on proper formatting with strong keywords, and it will improve your online marketing results.
