Marketing Help for Small Businesses and Start Ups Is Hard To Find

Marketing help for small businesses is not always easy to find. In fact, a recent conversation between myself and another thought leader in this industry highlighted how challenging marketing can often be for some small businesses. Unfortunately, many small businesses and startups seem to be underserved by traditional marketing companies and methods.

You can see the conclusion to our conversation on Twitter below. I replied to an industry thought leader’s tweet on Twitter because I wanted to make sure the point was made that small businesses and start ups are constantly pressured by freelancers and new marketing companies to spend hundreds or sometimes even a minimal amount for this “magic online marketing pill” that will make them millions.

When small businesses become skeptic they try to save money by doing it themselves and often make crucial mistakes that leave a bad taste in their mouths when it comes to online marketing.

Our conversation started after my industry colleague noticed that a local restaurant was advertising to people from all other the globe. This colleague observed how inefficient and wasteful this marketing campaign was. Our conversation eventually evolved into a discussion about how many small business owners do not have access to the resources that they need to run a well-designed, efficient, and locally targeted campaign.

At times, it can be incredibly difficult for entrepreneurs to find marketing help for small businesses. We have compiled the following tips as an introductory resource for small business owners who want a little help creating a truly effective marketing campaign.

Social Media

The power of social media should never be underestimated. With a well-managed social media account, companies can drive new clients to their website and ultimately to their brick and mortar locations. Social profiles should link to a company’s website, and they should be used creatively to promote the company’s brand in innovative and engaging ways. For more on this check out a recent blog post we published that includes information on how to optimize your social profiles.

Geo-Targeting

A geo-targeted advertising campaign allows companies to never waste money by trying to entice someone from Florida, for example, to shop in a store in Maine. Effective marketing campaigns use geo-targeting so that they only hit relevant consumers. This means that the money spent on these campaigns is infinitely more effective than the money that is spent on marketing that lacks a geo-target.

Content Management Systems

A Content Management System or CMS easily allows business owners to create websites that are optimized for search engines. Using CMS software, business owners can easily employ SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies without having to have any expert technical knowledge about website design or programing languages. Websites that have been recreated using SEO strategies attract more clients based on their effective use of relevant keywords. Popular SEO friendly CMS programs include WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and others. To learn more about this matter check our SEO lesson, How to build a seo friendly website.

Content Strategies

Well-designed web content should be an essential part of any small businesses online marketing plan. The right web content casts a business owner as an expert in their industry. This makes potential clients trust the business owner, and it makes these clients want to use the services or buy the goods of that business. Ideally, this content should resonate across the entrepreneur’s marketing platforms. For optimal results, the social media and social sharing icons should be tied into the content where applicable.

We understand that it can be hard to find marketing help for small businesses, and we believe that small businesses are the backbone of most communities and industries. To help entrepreneurs like you, we have created a selection of resources that will guide you as you create an effective marketing campaign.
